Shoulder Injuries

Shoulder injuries are much more common as a work place injury than people often imagine . Shoulder injuries can involve broken bones as well as dislocation . These types of injuries are quite painful and should be dealt with as soon as they happen. A healthy undamaged shoulder is essential for a persons overall happiness, as the shoulder has the largest range of movement of any of the joints in a persons body . Th is is why even a fairly small strain or break can cause a great degree of discomfort. Generally speaking, i t’s a g ood idea to work on maintaining the flexibility of the shoulder as well as the muscle tone of the arms. Doing t his can help to avoid many of the breaks and other injuries that the shoulder is prone to. Doing simple warm-ups before work is a good way to hold off minor injuries that can often occur in the workplace .

The most common shoulder injur y is dislocation . According to those who have experienced this, it feels like you’ve pulled your shoulder apart. The pain is greatest before the joint pops back in to the shoulder socket . After a dislocation, typically the arm may feel weak or even numb. Also, a person may be able to see or feel the ball joint of their shoulder sticking out under the skin . S houlder dislocation is caused when the ligaments that hold the ball joint in place, become worn , which when placed under physical stress, may allow the joint to pop out.

There is a significant difference between a partial and full dislocation , where the joint doesn’t pop right back in to the socket . When a full dislocation occurs , it is best to not let anyone but a medical professional put the shoulder back in place . In this case, t he ligaments have more than likely swollen , which means that pushing the joint back together without proper supervision will most likely only make things worse. A shoulder dislocation is a common injury in line type work that involves repetitive motion.

Another injury that is somewhat related to the shoulder is the br oken collarbone . A broken collar bone is quite a bit more painful than a dislocated shoulder. You’ll be able to feel the pain and swelling right away, and you may even be able to feel the actual break in the bone . Usually the collarbone breaks when a person’s shoulder hits something hard , for example; concrete . Simply falling with all of your weight on one hand can be enough to snap the thin bone that runs form you breastbone to your shoulder. T here’s no way to ‘pop’ a broken collar bone back into place. You’ll need to g et to an emergency room right away .
