Stressors in the Workplace

Stress can be brought on by a wide range of circumstances in the workplace. In recent years, it has been proven that prolonged stress at work can lead to injury and/or a psychological state known as burnout. Some of the effects of workplace stress are very pronounced and can come on without warning. In s ome cases the actual cause of strees does not originate in the workplace, but may still have an effect on a person’s performance at work . Some examples of th is might include death or injury of a loved one , breakup of a marriage, the birth of a baby , a promotion or job relocation .

Some of the things that can cause stress at work are obvious. For example, we’ve all been asked to do what we consider to be too much, but it i s a little known fact that having too little to do at work can also be aggravating or stressful . Being asked to do too little can lead to profound feelings of boredom . Boredom is a mild form of to stress.

Perceptions play an important role in what we perceive as stressful. When the boss delivers a project with a tight deadline, some people might become tense, while other s take this kind of pressure in stride. How you react to potentially stressful situations can depend on personal attributes , for example, self confidence.

There are several ways that self confident and informed pe ople can deal with the stressors that need to be dealt with in the work place on a daily basis. One option is to simply refuse a request that will clearly overload them. A person can also ask to be reassigned to a task that is better suited to their talents and aspirations . Also insisting on being given work that is clearly defined is an option that can be used.

T here are certain personal factors that make people more resistant to stress. People who believe they are in control of their own destiny and who generally expect the best from life are more likely to gain control over their stressors. However, these personality traits are not inherent in everyone . The se are personality traits that can be nurtured over time and relat e to an individual’s life experiences. What this means is that almost anyone can take control of and effectively deal with the stressors in their lives.
