Quite often there are similarities between the kinds of injuries that an athlete might suffer and the kind that can occur to workers in places such as warehouse s or factor ies . Knee injury is a c ommon injury that can occur in a variety of environments. Having one ligament on the outside and another on the inside, while serving as a connecter for the thigh bone and the shinbone , t he knee is strong, yet susceptible to injury. By keeping the muscles around the knees strong and flexible, you can avoid many common injuries that are sustained to the area.
A common knee affliction that is characterized by a general pain on the outside of the knee is Iliotibial Band Syndrome. This can result in having stiff legs, and discomfort when walking. Iliotibial Band, refers to a large muscle that stretches from the pelvis to the knee. If stress injur ies to the area are not too severe, check with your doctor and he /she may be able to help you by suggesting a series of exercises that will build the muscles back up over time. T his injury is caused by walking on uneven surfaces , so of course it can be avoided by varying the route that you have been walking on as much as possible .
Runners Knee is a common knee injury that one would generally associate with athletes. However, knee d amage occurs just as easily in the workplace environment where employees do a lot of running, as it does on the jogging track. For example, employees who run from one end of a building to the other during the course of their work may eventually find themselves having knee problems . Runner’s knee occurs when the kneecap slips out of alignment. Over time, the protective cartilage behind the knee can give way. In the workplace, this is often an injury that people who are supervisors sustain due to the fact that they need to oversee the activities of employees in many places, which in turn requires a lot of jogging or running from place to place. A doctor may simply recommend the application of ice to the afflicted area in order to reduce the pain . B ut , the activity that caused the problem in the first place may need to be curtailed. Reducing activity in this case is very important because the cartilage in the knee can be completely worn away which will cause serious problems in the future .
